Stay cool in summer (dogs)

It's definitely starting to feel like summer. The heat wave is rolling in, and while it's nice to see the sun again, I'm already looking forward to it cooling off a little. Our furry companions may be feeling the same way, as they don't sweat as we do; they cool off through their paws and by panting. With rising temperatures, dogs can find it difficult to cool off, especially while out exercising.

As owners, we may feel that dogs need a walk to tire them out. This is true' walks are enriching for them. But in this weather, it may be best to walk at cooler times of the day. This is before the sun is at it's peak and leaves that warm, stuffy, sticky air around. Walking may tire your pets out, but there are other ways, too.

Enrichment can be provided in a bunch of different ways, with walking and sniffing being one. We can also provide plenty of enrichment at home that can be just as tiring. Enrichment can be provided through training, playtime, socialising, toys and food.

Food puzzles can be a brilliant way to enrich our companions in this warm weather. Using cool foods like carrots, natural yoghurt, ice, berries, and apples can be a great way to help dogs stay refreshed. These natural foods are not only healthy (in moderation), but also help in the warmer weather.

One example of food enrichment:

  1. Line a dog bowl with natural yoghurt
  2. Add dog biscuits or berries to the side of the bowl
  3. Place it in the freezer to harden
  4. Give to your pet and watch them enjoy

This will help them cool off and keep them entertained for a little while. If you're worried about making a mess, place it on a mat or towel to catch the drips.

You can buy food puzzles if it makes life easier, or you could be creative and make your own! I've seen people use cardboard cartons, old plastic bottles, etc., which work really well! Although if your dog is destructive, it could be a hazard. It's important to think of your pet's personality, as like us, they are individual and have their own likes and dislikes.

Keeping our dogs cool, comfortable, and mentally enriched during hot weather can make summer safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
